Gandhi became one of the most respected political and spiritual leaders of the 1900s. He lived a spiritual and simple life of prayer, fasting, and meditation. Gandhi helped free the Indian people from British rule through nonviolent resistance. The Indian people called Gandhi “Mahatma,” meaning Great Soul.
