Voyager combines a contemporary theme-based approach with the best elements from traditional instruction. It teaches the essential reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills and strategies needed by adults to function on the job and in today's diverse, rapidly changing, and information-rich society. Within each student book, units are divided into popular themes and themes into lessons. A reading lesson – authentic literature, informational article, adult student writing, or graphic material – in the heart of each lesson. The reading comprehension, writing, and oral communication activities and skill-building exercises all relate to the reading. Lessons in the early books also teach phonics and other word recognition strategies. Throughout, Voyager encourages students to be active learners – engaged in thinking about and applying what they are learning.
